Tasting Notes
This classic Spanish blend bursts with aromas of cherry and strawberry confection over notes of fragrant violets and myrtle pepper. The inclusion of whole clusters in this stellar vintage provides extra lift to the nose with sweetened chai spice and orange peel aromatics. The palate opens soft, juicy, and sweetly fruited, combining crunchy black cherries and red liquorice from the Grenache, with the Tempranillo adding a touch of structure, spice and appealing savouriness. A wine inspired by a trip through the Iberian Peninsula and many hours dedicated to food and wine enjoyment in the shade of tapas bars across the country…
100% Hazel’s Vineyard. Our southernmost vineyard further inland than our Burnside and Calgardup vineyards. Hazel’s combines cooling Southern Ocean influences with a northerly aspect and plenty of sunshine. Certified Biodynamic.
Wine Making
Warm and dry, 2022 was a great season for these two Spanish varietals. We wanted to create something special and unique, so we identified a small, hilltop section within the western ridge at Hazel’s Vineyard that is particularly gravelly and produces smaller bunches with superior concentration and aromatic lift. We hand-picked these two parcels and fermented them separately in small concrete vats with the aim of showcasing aromatics above all. We didn’t use any oak in the process, and the wine was matured in concrete for 12 months before bottling without any fining and filtration
Vintage Report
A season that slowly escalated into a very hectic but also exciting harvest. A cooler and wet Spring saw vine growth delayed in development, and we were set for a late start of harvest. But then Summer came, and it was full of sunshine, dry and warm through December, January, and February with warm days and some warm nights. The red harvest started about a week after the end of the whites, giving our busy cellar team very little time to catch their breath. Yields were lower than expected across red varietals as well, however the warm and dry weather created desirable conditions for our reds that are already showcasing fantastic tannin ripeness, concentration, and vibrancy of colour.
