2021 Chloé Rosé

2021 Chloé Rosé

This very pale rose’ belies a powerfully-flavoured, persistent and layered drink and a true expression of the Provencal style. Floral notes of orange blossom and star jasmine lip from the glass together with wild strawberry and fresh pastry undertones. The palate is creamy and textured, with masses of juicy nectarine flavours and aromatic orange zest. Beautifully refreshing and very satisfying, this dry rose’ show definition and drive on the palate with a distinctive saline aftertaste.

Winemaking

50% Mourvedre and 50% Tempranillo. These two parcels of certified biodynamic fruit from our Hazel’s Vineyard were hand-picked in the early, cooler hours of the morning. The fruit was then refrigerated overnight and gently pressed to a stainless steel tank. Only the first and best fraction of the juice was selected, ensuring a light colour and only the most delicate flavours were extracted from the berries. A cool and slow fermentation was encouraged and after fermentation the wine spent 6 months on fine lees in order achieve texture and complexity.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Lifted and varietal nose, with lychee, guava and ripe loquat fruit, intertwined with pastry notes from extended lees contact and barrel fermentation. The palate is full flavoured and very textural, with a core of ripe tropical fruit and a touch of grassiness, balanced by a salty but creamy acid line. More savoury than the aroma allures, this wine finishes with briny phenolics and some flinty wild ferment complexity. A highly flavoured and textural wine.
Vineyard Notes
100% Calgardup Brook Vineyard. This vineyard lies just inland from the coast. Its sandy, schisty soils are well weathered.
Winemaker Notes
Sourced from 20 year old vines off our Calgardup Brook Vineyard. The fruit was picked in the cool hours of the night, whole berry pressed and taken with some solids to barriques for extra texture and aromatic complexity. Fermented in both French oak barriques (10% new) and large format cask. Partial MLF and frequent lees stirring through the year. After 6 months in barrels the wine was taken with all solids into tank for extended time (3 months) on fermentation lees before bottling in December 2020.
Other Notes
Vintage Report We were blessed with near perfect growing conditions in Margaret River in 2020. A warmer than usual Spring, a dry, sunny Summer and cool nights. Significant diurnal temperature variations meant perfect ripening conditions across all of our dry grown vineyards. No disease and virtually no bird pressure (particularly at the start of harvest) meant we were able to pick beautifully clean fruit at ideal ripeness and flavour levels ... a real treat for our winemaking team. The only downside was exceptionally low yields across all varieties. Our dry farmed vineyard responded to the drier seasonal conditions by producing tiny and light bunches with small berries. Consequently, the fruit has incredible concentration and has retained a lovely natural acidity.
