Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Voluptuous and expressive, this wine shows fresh pastry, lemon curd, oatmeal, and notes of grilled peach. Wild fermentation and extended time on lees contributes a delicious savoury character to the palate which is both powerful yet defined by a frame of natural acidity. From a heritage Margaret River vineyard on the south bank of the Margaret River itself, this Chardonnay captures the distinctive character of this unique site.
Vineyard
100% Burnside Vineyard. Located on the bend of the Margaret River, this old vineyard grows on unique micaceous and granitic soils. The chardonnay rows are on a steep northerly aspect running in a north-west, southeast orientation.
Wine Making
Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed and transferred directly to oak with full solids. Fermented by native yeast in French oak barriques (approximately 30% new). Batonnage to encourage autolytic activity was based on flavour and partial MLF to balance the high natural acidity of this vintage. The wine was racked out of barrels with full lees to tank in December before bottling in February 2022.
Vintage Report
The 2021 season started out with a cooler, wet spring which resulted in a lower fruit set for some varieties such as Chardonnay. We experienced above average rainfalls in early spring, meaning extra effort was required in our organically grown vineyards to mitigate disease pressure. Spring rolled into summer with long warm and dry days, however a couple of rain events in February and March required extra effort from our committed vineyard team in terms of canopy management and fruit selection at harvest. All white varieties show fragrance and vineyard characters with perfume and aromatic lift combined with elegant textures and fine acid lines.
