From a tiny, 1 hectare parcel of Ironstone rich soil on the eastern side of Hazel’s Vineyard, our 2020 Tempranillo shows its signature pedigree from the start: fragrant dark cherries, sarsaparilla, violets and cola abound on the nose. The palate is medium-body, juicy and incredibly appealing with loads of red and dark fruits, allspice, cured meats and chocolate flavours leading to a distinctive tannin profile and a deliciously dry finish.
100% Hazel’s Vineyard - biodynamically farmed and our southernmost vineyard. Hazel’s combines cooling Southern Ocean influences (12km from the ocean) with a northerly aspect and plenty of sunshine.
The fruit for our Tempranillo was hand-picked and gently destemmed to maintain the integrity of the berries. The fruit was then transferred by gravity to an open fermenter for whole berry fermentation and gentle extraction for 8 days then softly pressed to small neutral oak for malo-lactic fermentation. Maturation in old oak lasted for about 10 months. In order to capture the beautiful aromatics of this exciting Iberian variety, we decided to blend and bottle this wine early in January 2021
Vintage Report: We were blessed with near perfect growing conditions in Margaret River in 2020. A warmer than usual Spring, a dry, sunny Summer and cool nights. Significant diurnal temperature variations meant perfect ripening conditions across all of our dry grown vineyards. No disease and virtually no bird pressure (particularly at the start of harvest) meant we were able to pick beautifully clean fruit at ideal ripeness and flavour levels ... a real treat for our winemaking team. The only downside was exceptionally low yields across all varieties. Our dry farmed vineyard responded to the drier seasonal conditions by producing tiny and light bunches with small berries. Consequently, the fruit has incredible concentration and has retained a lovely natural acidity.
