Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Complex and highly fragrant, this Syrah shows dark cherries, black pepper and cinnamon, entwined with a savoury note of smoked meats and liquorice. The palate is full bodied with inky blackberries and a velvety mocha note, followed by roasted spice and a frame of firm but supple tannins. A wine unlike any other in the region and a true reflection of the ‘Syrah’ style.
Vineyard
100% Hazel’s Vineyard. Our southernmost vineyard which is furthe inland than our Burnside and Calgardup vineyards. Hazel’s combines cooling Southern Ocean influences with a northerly aspect and plenty of sunshine. Soil type: Ironstone gravel loam.
Wine Making
Sourced from a single block of Syrah at Hazel’s Vineyard. A portion of the fruit was hand harvested and a wood fermenter was then filled with fruit, 15% of which were whole clusters. The fermenter was then sealed for several days to allow for carbonic maceration within the berries. A small amount of Roussanne was co-fermented with the Syrah to elevate the aromatic lift of the wine. Gentle extraction followed for the following 10 days. After pressing, the wine was aged in a single 2700L French Oak Cask for 10 months, before racking and bottling in summer 2021.
Vintage Report
We were blessed with near perfect growing conditions in Margaret River in 2020. A warmer than usual Spring, a dry, sunny Summer and cool nights. Significant diurnal temperature variations meant perfect ripening conditions across all of our dry grown vineyards. No disease and virtually no bird pressure (particularly at the start of harvest) meant we were able to pick beautifully clean fruit at ideal ripeness and flavour levels, a real treat for our winemaking team. The only downside was exceptionally low yields across all varieties. Our dry farmed vineyard responded to the drier seasonal conditions by producing tiny and light bunches with small berries. Consequently, the fruit has incredible concentration and has retained a lovely natural acidity.
