2017 Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay

2017 Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay

A lifted bouquet of mandarin peal and lemon curd leap from the glass with graphite and struck match adding layers of complexity. Creamy and textured this Chardonnay’s purity of flavour is well balanced with succulent acidity which is typical of the vintage. This wine has plenty of nerve and energy complemented by impressive length.

"Lots of detail in this wine, indeed. A kind of understated oatmeal funk that sits below pure and true, concentrated chardonnay stone fruit and citrus scents and flavours. Slips through the palate, loaded with grapey flavour but cool restraint from saline acidity too. Really delicious is the message. And complex. So satisfying."
Score 95/100 - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

"Fruit from a low-yielding, north-facing slope on the estate vineyard. Red loam and lateritic gravel soil, biodynamically-farmed. The funkiest bouquet of 'the three chardonnays' with an almost champagne-like lees character. Stone fruit varietal flavours and toasty/nutty/mealy nuances on the palate, concentrated and tightly wound. Better with time".
Score 95/100 - James Halliday Wine Companion 2020

"Bright yellow colour, fresh and bright. Brioche, herbs and citrus - more savoury than fruited aromatics. Just ripe, pale lemons and ripe grapefruit; this is delicious - oak adds frame and focus, lovely minerality and commanding length. Pure class."
Score 96/100 - Nick Butler, The Real Review

"A delicately finessed yet powerfully intense chardonnay that captures the modern style of Margaret River so perfectly. The aromas are compelling, with light grapefruit and butterscotch. Yet it is the palate which is exceptional, with it's length and power that accelerates to a driving finish. An exciting wine that points to te future. Great cellaring potential."
Score 97/100 - Ray Jordan, The West Australian Wine Guide 2019

Wine Profile
100% Hazel’s Vineyard - certified biodynamic in 2020. Our southernmost vineyard characterised by coarse ironstone gravel loam soil, Southern Ocean breezes, a northerly aspect and plenty of Margaret River sunshine.
Wine Making
Winemaking - hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, full solids and wild fermentation in barrique (approx. 25% new). Post ferment, barrels are left cool but unsulphured for 4 months to encourage autolytic activity. Batonnage every two weeks based on flavour and partial MLF. Wine was racked with full lees to tank in December and spent two months on lees in tank before bottling unfiltered.
Vintage Report
After desirable conditions during flowering, the summer started cool and wet, slowing down the growing season significantly. Conditions improved in late February, developing into a perfect Indian summer. The result is whites that are packed with energy and poise, and reds that got the benefit of a long, cool ripening periods; tannin ripeness and complex flavour developments. Alcohols are lower than previous years, even with greater physiological ripeness.
