2014 Hazel's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

2014 Hazel's Cabernet Sauvignon

The fruit for our single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from an outstanding parcel at our Hazel’s Vineyard in southern Margaret River. Fragrant aromas of wild thyme, violets and black currant are tempered with savoury black olive tapenade, tobacco leaf and a gravel dust undertone. The fleshy palate reveals maraschino cherries, cassis and graphite supported by a framework of firm but fine tannins providing length and definition to the palate.

A purist’s Cabernet; unfined and unfiltered, this is an elegant expression of Hazel’s Vineyard with harmony, balance and integrity.

"Energetic - edgy even - with lifted gunpowder tea, spicy, green peppercorn and liquorice, dynamic spiralling tannins and good drive to its firm, bright blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Finishes very long, with terrific gravel/graphite carry"
Score 95/100 - Sarah Ahmed, Decanter Magazine March 2020

"This is sumptuous Margaret River cabernet, displaying all the regional virtues: cassis, black plum, pastille, dried sage and a firm tea tannin spine. Yet it is the generosity of fruit that is the wine's calling card. Pillars of French oak (14 months; 20% new) keep this wine postured and proudly youthful, yet the wine's poise and extract bode very well for maturity when it all loosens up".
Score 94/100 - James Halliday Wine Companion 2018

"Cabernet from the southern end of the famed Margaret River region. A strong, structured cabernet with both length and elegance in its armoury. The flavours here are beautiful. Blackcurrant, mint, milk chocolate and fresh herbs. Perhaps even flashes of lead pencil and cedarwood. Alcohol seems just fractionally prominent but in all other respects this is pretty terrific."
Score 92+ - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front 2017

Score 94/100 - Decanter World Wine Awards 2016

Wine Profile
100% Hazel’s Vineyard - certified biodynamic in 2020. Our southernmost vineyard characterised by coarse ironstone gravel loam soil, Southern Ocean breezes, a northerly aspect and plenty of Margaret River sunshine.
Wine Making
Single parcels of sustainably grown fruit undergo partial wild fermentation and 14-months maturation in fine French Oak (20% new) and stone vessels with minimal additions. Unfined and unfiltered. This produces an honest wine, combining influences of the site and season to express a unique personality.
Vintage Report
Vintage - We have experienced another stellar season. The wettest winter for some time was followed by a dry and warm spring, punctuated by a wild spring storm that reduced yields of all white varieties as it coincided with flowering. A warm and dry summer with plentiful sunshine and no significant heatwaves set us on the path to two distinct harvest periods for white and red varieties. The reason that this year stood out was the absence of any heatwave during the white harvest coupled with cool evenings. The benefit of the cool evenings is evident in the retention of natural acidity in both red and white varieties. All wines have wonderfully ripe tannins and a fine, long and elegant structure (thanks in part to higher acidity), which should see these wines destined for a long cellar life.
