2023 McHenry Hohnen Ironstone Grenache Tempranillo

This classic Spanish blend opens with vibrant aromas of cherry and strawberry confection, lifted by fragrant violets and myrtle pepper. Whole-cluster inclusion in this stellar vintage brings added aromatic complexity, with notes of sweetened chai spice and orange peel.

The palate is soft and juicy, showing sweet red fruit and energy. Crunchy black cherries and red liquorice from Grenache lead the charge, while Tempranillo adds structure, spice, and savoury appeal. A wine made for long lunches, shaded tapas bars, and good company.

Vineyard: 100% Hazel's Vineyard. As McHenry Hohnen's southernmost and certified biodynamic vineyard, Hazel’s Vineyard is located near Witchcliffe in the headwaters of Chapman Brook. The site features free-draining ironstone gravel loam soils over a strong clay base, providing excellent drainage and promoting healthy vine growth. The vineyard's northerly aspect and exposure to cooling Southern Ocean influences contribute to the cultivation of a diverse range of varieties, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Merlot, Grenache, Petit Verdot, and Mataro.

2023 provided ideal conditions for these Spanish varietals. Fruit was sourced from a small, gravelly hilltop section on the western ridge of Hazel’s Vineyard, where bunches are naturally smaller and concentration is high. Hand-picked and fermented separately in small concrete vats, both parcels were made with aromatics in mind. No oak was used—maturation occurred entirely in concrete for 12 months. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its natural vibrancy and detail.
