2023 McHenry Hohnen Grenache

On the nose this wine shows intriguing aromas of blood orange, cinnamon and red cherries which are complemented by floral notes of lavender and saltbush.

The palate is juicy, with sweet red fruit balanced by crunchy natural acidity and a frame of long, gravelly tannins.

Vineyard: Hazel’s Vineyard reflects our commitment to regenerative farming and the pursuit of quality through responsible agriculture. Located in Forest Grove, this southern Margaret River site is defined by free draining ironstone gravel soils, a cooling maritime influence, and a north-facing aspect ensuring optimal exposure to the sunlight. Sustainable farming practices have brought enhanced vitality into these soils, enabling us to produce wines with exceptional texture, vibrancy, and site expression.

A season of great balance, which produced wines of grace, perfume, and longevity. Winter was wet and cold, and we experienced a cool but dry spring. Good flowering conditions secured good yields. Summer was dry with relatively mild temperatures leading into January; Summer brought fantastic weather with warm, sunny, and breezy days, but without heat stress for the vines. Excellent diurnal temperature variation set us up for a highly aromatic vintage, with freshness and perfect phenological ripeness.

Sourced from a tiny, gravelly section of the Grenache block at our certified biodynamic Hazel’s Vineyard. The fruit was hand-harvested and fermented as whole clusters in a sealed fermenter. After seven days of maceration, it was gently pressed to large-format oak and concrete vessels for malolactic fermentation and maturation on lees. The wine spent just over 10 months in vessel, followed by a further 24 months of bottle ageing before release.
