2020 McHenry Hohnen BDX Magnum

Fragrant and lifted, with dark cherries and crushed violets at the core. Aromatic spice and ripe mulberries are layered with subtle notes of cedar and mocha, adding both sweetness and savoury intrigue.

Voluminous and soft, the palate flows with plush dark fruit and sweet spice. Cabernet Sauvignon lends structure, while Petit Verdot adds aromatic lift. Fine, ripe tannins shape the wine and give it length, balance, and drive.

Vineyard: Hazel’s Vineyard is our southernmost site in Margaret River, located near Witchcliffe in the headwaters of Chapman Brook. Prior to its biodynamic certification in 2021, it was farmed with a strong focus on soil health and sustainability. With ironstone gravel loam soils, a northerly aspect, and strong maritime influence from the Southern Ocean, the vineyard produces red wines of structure, perfume, and depth—particularly well suited to Malbec and Cabernet blends.

The 2020 growing season delivered near-perfect conditions across Margaret River. A warmer-than-usual spring was followed by a dry, sunny summer and cool nights—ideal for even ripening and flavour concentration. Diurnal temperature variation was pronounced, helping retain natural acidity and aromatic freshness. With no disease pressure and minimal bird impact, fruit was harvested in pristine condition. Low yields due to the dry season led to smaller berries and tighter bunches, resulting in intensely flavoured fruit with remarkable concentration and balance.

The fruit—sourced exclusively from Hazel’s Vineyard—was mostly destemmed but not crushed, preserving whole berries to enhance perfume and fruit purity. Fermented in concrete fermenters with gentle extraction over 2–3 weeks, the wine was then pressed to French oak barriques (20% new) and matured for 16 months. Each parcel was handled separately until blending and bottling in Spring 2021.
