Top Things to Do in Margaret River

The Margaret River region offers a different kind of magic – moody coastlines, forest walks and world-class food and wine experiences. Whether you're planning a cosy getaway or a spontaneous weekend escape, here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy the region (and yes, that includes wine tasting).

1. Visit McHenry Hohnen’s Cellar Door

Located just south of Margaret River town, our relaxed and rustic cellar door is the perfect place to discover our biodynamically farmed, single-vineyard wines. Enjoy a guided tasting, settle in with a glass or bottle and savour a bite from the Vintner’s Kitchen – made with seasonal produce and designed to match what’s in your glass.

2. Walk a Section of the Cape to Cape Track

Head out onto the Cape to Cape Track, and bask in the dramatic coastal vistas as you hike the quiet trails. Watch the waves crash below cliffside lookouts, spot migrating whales offshore and soak up the raw natural beauty of the region.

3. Explore the Ancient Caves with Koomal Dreaming

Venture underground into the limestone wonderlands of Ngilgi, Mammoth or Jewel Cave. For a deeper connection to place, experience a Koomal Dreaming tour where Wadandi custodian Josh Whiteland shares stories, bush medicine and culture woven through the land and its ancient formations.

4. Surf World-Class Winter Waves

Winter is swell season in the South West and if you’re game, Margaret River delivers. From beginner-friendly breaks like Redgate to legendary spots like Surfers Point, the waves are uncrowded and powerful. Pack your wetsuit, the water might be brisk, but the waves are worth it.

5. Paddle the Margaret River

Slow things down with a peaceful paddle along the Margaret River itself. Hire a kayak or join a guided tour to explore the meandering waterway, lined with peppermint trees and bursting with birdlife. A perfect way to take in the stillness from a new perspective.

6. Wander the Boranup Karri Forest

Just south of our vineyards, the towering Boranup Karri Forest is a must-visit – especially in winter, when morning fog weaves through the trees and the forest floor springs to life with fungi and wildflowers. It’s a serene, cinematic escape just minutes from the coast.

7. Visit Canal Rocks

This natural granite formation is a dramatic reminder of nature’s raw power as waves smash through the narrow channels with incredible force. Stroll the boardwalks, take in the scenery and bring your camera, you’ll want to remember this view.

8. Spend a Morning at the Margaret River Farmers Market

Local flavours shine at the Margaret River Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday morning. Browse seasonal produce, artisan cheese, freshly baked goods and handcrafted products, many from the same growers and makers who supply the region’s restaurants and wineries. It’s the perfect place to gather a picnic or find something special to pair with a bottle of McHenry Hohnen wine.

Whether you're here for the surf or the cellar doors, Margaret River is full of memorable moments. We’d love to welcome you to McHenry Hohnen while you’re here.
