Our Winter Trio: Warming Reds with Character and Soul

There’s something about winter that calls for deeper reds: wines with spice, warmth and layers of flavour.

Enter: the McHenry Hohnen Winter Trio, featuring Grenache, Tempranillo and Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre), this trio celebrates the versatility of Mediterranean varieties and their ability to shine both solo and in blends.

Grenache, Tempranillo and Mataro: A Brief Origin Story

All three varieties originate from warm, sun-drenched regions (think Spain and the south of France) but they thrive in the southern part of Margaret River, where our vineyards benefit from ocean influence, gravel loams and biodynamic farming.

  • Grenache: Known for its juicy red fruit and spice, Grenache brings lift and generosity to the blend.

  • Tempranillo: Spain’s noble grape, Tempranillo adds dark cherry, structure and a savoury backbone.

  • Mataro (Mourvèdre): Deep and earthy, Mataro contributes tannin, complexity and a brooding finish.

Hazel’s Vineyard Grenache – A Sense of Site

At McHenry Hohnen, our Grenache speaks clearly of its origins, specifically, a tiny, gravelly section within Hazel’s Vineyard. This special pocket of soil produces wines of remarkable energy and finesse.

On the nose, you’ll find intriguing aromas of blood orange, red cherries, star anise, and dried lavender, with a savoury edge of saltbush and herbal spice. The palate is juicy and bright, lifted by crunchy natural acidity and framed by long, gravelly tannins. It’s a wine of purity and character, balancing generosity with restraint.

GSM – Grenache, Syrah, Mataro

A Rhône-inspired blend with an Australian edge. This wine bursts with aromas of mulberry, black cherry, and violets, wrapped in notes of chai spice and dried herbs. Whole bunch fermentation lifts the aromatics and adds a silky, spiced finish. Generous yet structured, it’s a red that evolves beautifully in the glass.

Grenache Tempranillo – A Spanish-Inspired Blend

A nod to Spain’s tapas culture and relaxed hospitality, this blend is bright, juicy, and full of charm. Expect aromas of cherry, strawberry, and sweet spice with hints of orange peel and myrtle pepper. On the palate, Grenache offers red liquorice and fruit-forward vibrancy, while Tempranillo brings savoury depth and structure. A perfect match for slow-cooked lamb, woodfired pizza, or a cosy evening in.

Why These Wines Work in Winter

These Mediterranean varieties are made for winter feasting – they're versatile with food, comforting in texture and layered enough to hold your attention. Whether blended or bottled solo, Grenache, Tempranillo and Mataro offer warmth, character and a little bit of wanderlust in every glass.
