Hazel’s Vineyard Cabernet

Cabernet Sauvignon is widely regarded as one of the world’s great red varieties, and Margaret River has earned an international reputation for producing some of its most elegant, structured and age-worthy expressions.

For us, Cabernet is also about place. And at Hazel’s Vineyard, that place has a character all of its own.

The heart of McHenry Hohnen

Located near Witchcliffe at the headwaters of Chapman Brook, Hazel’s Vineyard is our southernmost site and the heart of McHenry Hohnen.

The vineyard enjoys a northerly aspect, with ample sunshine balanced by the cooling influence of the nearby Southern Ocean. Beneath the vines, free-draining ironstone gravel loam soils sit over a strong clay base, supporting balanced vine growth and the development of fruit with concentration, perfume and natural freshness.

It is a site particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines with fine structure and a distinctly elegant expression of southern Margaret River.

Hazel’s is also home to our winery, bringing vineyard and winemaking together in one place.

Farming with the vineyard

Hazel’s Vineyard is certified biodynamic, reflecting a farming philosophy centred on soil health, biodiversity and the long-term vitality of the land.

For us, what happens in the vineyard ultimately shapes what is possible in the winery. Healthy vines and balanced fruit allow us to take a gentle, minimal-intervention approach and let the character of each site come through in the finished wine.

2020 Hazel’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit was gently transferred by gravity into open stone fermenters before undergoing natural fermentation with native yeasts from the site.

The result is a Cabernet that balances concentration with restraint.

Lifted cassis, violets and black olive are layered with oak spice and warm, earthy notes. The palate is silky yet concentrated, with mulberry, dark cocoa and graphite carried by firm, finely woven tannins.

Elegant, complex and built to age, the 2020 Hazel’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a pure expression of Cabernet from the southern reaches of Margaret River.

More than anything, it is a wine that speaks to where it comes from.
