A hotelier by heritage and a farmer by heart, Murray McHenry has long been a driving force in Western Australia’s wine, hospitality and sporting communities.

murray's vision
Murray's legacy began with the creation of one of Perth’s most respected fine wine retail businesses, followed by the transformation of Steve’s Hotel in Nedlands into an iconic venue — renowned for its world-class wine cellar and vibrant local spirit.
Murray planted his first vines in Margaret River in 1984 at what is now Burnside Vineyard, well before the region gained its global recognition. Over the decades, his vision has remained steadfast: to farm with integrity, nurture the land and craft wines that speak of place.
His deep commitment to sustainable viticulture led to the development of Hazel’s Vineyard, now certified biodynamic and the beating heart of McHenry Hohnen. Here, Murray continues to farm sheep, bees, olive trees and vines.
always with a view of giving back more than he takes, Murray is passionate, hands-on and future focused; never settling, never complacent.
the mchenry legacy
Beyond the vineyard, Murray has made substantial contributions to Australian football. As a founding figure of the West Coast Eagles, he served in various leadership roles, including Deputy Chair, Director and Chairman. His strategic guidance was instrumental in the club's early successes, notably their premiership victories in 1992 and 1994. Murray's dedication to the sport extended to his tenure as Chairman of the West Australian Football Commission from 2015 to 2019.
His service to sport, hospitality and the broader community was recognised in 2022 with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). He is also a Chevalier of the Ordre du Mérite Agricole — a French knighthood honouring his outstanding contribution to agriculture.
A pioneering figure in Margaret River, Murray remains as passionate, hands-on and future-focused as ever; never settling, never complacent. His leadership, generosity and deep connection to the land continue to shape McHenry Hohnen and inspire everything we do.
